Read Me First

Opening Butter Spread the first time. It takes about a minute.

A quick, honest note: we're a tiny studio and our Apple and Windows signing is still being set up. Until then your computer doesn't recognise us yet, so it shows a one-time warning. The files are exactly what we built. Only download Butter Spread from pluginsforbreakfast.com.

Mac

  1. Double-click the downloaded .zip to unzip it, then double-click Butter-Spread-1.0.0-mac.pkg.
  2. If macOS says it "cannot be opened" or "Apple could not verify" it, click Done. Don't move it to the Bin.
  3. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down, and next to the message about Butter Spread click Open Anyway. Enter your Mac password, then click Open.
  4. On macOS before Sequoia you can instead right-click (or Control-click) the .pkg, choose Open, then Open.
  5. Click Continue until the installer finishes. Butter Spread goes in as an AU and a VST3.
  6. Logic Pro: restart Logic. If it's missing, open Logic Pro > Settings > Plug-in Manager, select Butter Spread and click Reset & Rescan Selection. Ableton Live: Settings > Plug-Ins > Rescan.

Windows

  1. Before unzipping, right-click the downloaded .zip, choose Properties, tick Unblock at the bottom (if it's there) and click OK. Then right-click it and choose Extract All.
  2. Run Butter-Spread-1.0.0-windows-setup.exe.
  3. If a blue box says "Windows protected your PC", click More info, check it names Butter Spread, then click Run anyway. It appears for any new, unsigned app and is not a virus warning.
  4. The installer puts Butter Spread in C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3.
  5. Rescan in your DAW. Ableton: Options > Preferences > Plug-Ins, turn on "Use VST3 Plug-In System Folders", Rescan. FL Studio: Options > Manage plugins > Find plugins. Reaper: Options > Preferences > Plug-ins > VST > Re-scan. Cubase: Studio > VST Plug-in Manager > Rescan.
  6. Butter Spread is 64-bit only. If your antivirus quarantines it, email us rather than switching your protection off.
